VEDIC AGE
Vedic age:Rigvedic polity polity was based on a tribal structure. The king had to fulfill two objectives. Firstly to lead his people in war and to protect his people. But the position of the king was not clear. He was essentially identified with his tribe as he was called JANASYA GOPA (chief of his people). Although the post of the king became heredietry but still we find some cases of election of the kings in rigveda.
As the people were not leading the settled life, so the taxation system was not established. That’s why the king could not maintain a professional army or professional bureaucracy.
Cattle breeding played more significant role in economy , agriculture being the secondary occupation. We hear about certain crafts like chariot making, carpenting, pot making, copper and bronze making etc. But still the no of crafts were limited.
Society was more or less egalitarian in rigvedic age. In other words , we can say although division started but the bases of division was occupation not the birth.
