RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION (RFID)
Radio frequency identification (RFID) is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags. RFID is a tracking technology.
An RFID tag is an object that can be applied to or incorporated into a product,animal or person for the pupose of identification using radio waves. Some tags can be read from several meters away and beyond the line of sight of the reader.
Today, RFID is used in enterprise supply chain management to improve the efficiency of inventory tracking and management.
Applications:
The immediate applications for RFID technology in india would be shopping malls, supply chain companies, pharmaceutiacals,transportation businesses and governmental organisations.
In the departmental stores, the trolleyful of goods have been scanned and the total bill is ready for before one goes to the counter. With RFID several hundred people can at once be cleared by scanning sticker tickets pasted on to them at cricket grounds for entry. Go past toll collection centres wiyhout waiting. RFID makes the job easier-RFID reader scans the tag attached to the vehicle, gets the credit card information and debits the amount due each time one passes.
Transporting perishable food items in cold storage containers and if one is worried about temperature fluctuations,businesses can attach special active RFID tags that relay container temperatures back to the company offices.
RFID technology is important in e-governancre. In the defence ministry, it is used to track files,if someone has taken it from one room to the next, it can be identified as the files are tagged. The Gujarat co-operative milk marketing foundation is using it to tag buffaloes (remember those stories of banks giving 20 cattle loans with the same cow as security). RFID is used to track railway wagons, cooking gas cylinders etc.
RFID is currently being used by libraries in india.
